Anyone who has worked with refrigerators will tell you about the importance of maintaining them. There are a few things that anyone can do to improve your unit's life span and energy consumption. Here are a few ideas to help you maintain your refrigerators.

Maintenance you can do

When you own commercial and industrial refrigerators, it is important that you check them on a regular bases. To keep them running efficiently and keep them from breaking down, it is recommended to spot check your units at least once a month. If possible, twice a month.

Here is are a few things to look for while doing your monthly inspection.

  • Check the condenser coils. Dust will build up here, make sure they are clean.
  • nspect the door seals. Don't let your cold air out and warm air in.
  • Check for clogged drain pipes.

If during your inspection you find that your units have dirt built up on the condenser coils, dirty door seals, expired food, or any other mess, you may need to clean it. It is recommended that you only clean one unit at a time as you will need to first empty the contents of the refrigerator into another refrigerator. If you do not have another refrigerator available to move stuff, several large camping coolers with ice will work just fine.

While you are emptying the contents of the refrigerator into another container is a great time to take stock of what you have and throw away any expired food. If you can, unplug the unit you are working on to reduce your chance of getting shocked.

At this point we are good to start cleaning. Get yourself a bucket of warm soapy water. Depending on how long it has been sense you last cleaned your fridge, the frozen grim built up might be harder to clean out. A microfiber cloth works great for scrubbing your whole fridge. If you are finding that you can't quite get everything with the cloth, a tooth brush will do the trick.

Once you are happy with how clean your refrigerator is, plug it back in and let it cool down to normal operating temperatures before restocking it.

Maintenance a professional should do

You will have a lot times when you are doing your monthly inspection of your equipment and you'll notice some dirt in places you can't reach. Take note of all these places. It is important to keep you units clean to help with efficiency. You may need to call a professional to come service your machine.

When the professional comes, they will have their list of things to check. Make sure that they also deep clean your unit, check the temperature gauges, and inspect all of the wiring and compressor.

Because the professionals will have to take some parts off to check everything, this is a great time to clean those places you can't normally reach. Ask the pro to dust and wipe down everything they can. If they work on the condenser coils, ask them if they can clean it off with soapy water. If your drains are clogged, a professional should easily be able to clean them out.

Lastly, ask the professional to do a complete check of the electrical system. Over time the temperature gauge can start to display the wrong temperature. This will need to be tuned to make sure you are storing your food at the correct temperature.
